What do we do in second grade?

In second grade, we are becoming better readers by learning to read bigger words, increasing our fluency (how fast and smooth we read), expanding our vocabulary and improving our comprehension. Please continue reading nightly for homework. The best way to become a better reader is to read, read, read!

We write every day during writing workshop. We use this time to become better spellers, better at grammar and other conventions of writing, but most importantly, better at communicating our ideas on paper.

In second grade, we will work all year long at developing our understanding of place value and becoming better at manipulating numbers, as well as developing various other math skills.
Be sure to visit www.tx.gr2math.com for some great opportunities to see just what your student is learning in math. This is the website that correlates with our math text book. You can see exactly what they are learning as the year progresses. It has some great online practice activities (especially math facts) as well as some ways to print out extra math practice at home. (Please refer to note sent home with your student regarding directions and a code to enter to have full access to these materials. You can access many of the items without the code, however.)
